TradeWinds Markets have raised $1 million to help those affected by cancer
Allen L’Italien, BSN, OCN, RN, executive director, Northern Light Cancer Care, center, honors Belinda and Chuck Lawrence, owners of TradeWinds Markets, as their Pumped Up to Fight Cancer campaign reaches the $1 million mark.
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute have recognized TradeWinds Markets for achieving a milestone that has changed thousands of lives: raising $1 million through their Pumped Up to Fight Cancer initiative to help Maine families affected by cancer.
Since 2011, Tradewinds has donated 1 cent from every gallon of gas pumped at its 15 stores to the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute and several other healthcare and community organizations that provide cancer treatment and support services. Tradewinds owners Chuck and Belinda Lawrence choose to focus on helping cancer patients because the disease has affected many of their family members, friends, customers, and employees.
“Virtually every person in Maine is affected by cancer in some way,” said Chuck Lawrence in a press release. “That’s why we’re proud to get to the $1 million mark. Every penny raised stays close to home to help those who are facing one of the most difficult times of their lives. We hope that this support can help patients focus on the most important thing: getting better.”
Many Lafayette Family Cancer Institute patients struggle with the extra expenses involved with fighting cancer, such as transportation, household expenses, lodging, and medication costs. Pumped Up to Fight Cancer fills helps patients and families with some of the most essential needs.
“TradeWinds’ generosity has made a significant difference in quality of life for many cancer patients,” noted Allen L’Italien, BSN, OCN, RN, executive director, Northern Light Cancer Care. “This is directly due to their significant support of a wide range of patient services such as helping with transportation expenses, hair pieces, emergency relief funds, and even breast prosthesis. They truly care to make a difference in the lives of those suffering with cancer as their donations are only used to help people directly with their immediate needs.”
Chuck Lawrence credits TradeWinds’ customers and employees for making Pumped Up to Fight Cancer such a success, and they look forward to continuing to grow the program.
