On Tuesday, May 28, residents of Deer Isle and Stonington will have the opportunity to vote on the 2013-14 school budget at the annual budget meeting, followed by a ballot referendum in each town on Tuesday, June 11. The budget meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the high school. Polling hours have not been established for the ballot referendum.

At its monthly meeting Tuesday, May 7, the CSD school board approved the budget to go before voters. The budget totals $6,796,786, a $184,307 or 2.79 percent increase over the current year’s budget. See the complete annual superintendent’s report elsewhere in this issue of the Island Ad-Vantages.

Should voters approve the budget as is, the total local share will increase by $83,374, given an increase in expected state subsidy.

Staffing at the elementary school is expected to remain constant, with some increased budget items at the high school, including $35,000 for participation in the state’s laptop program, a .88 full-time equivalent study hall monitor and a full-time librarian aide, who would spend four days at the high school and one day at the elementary school, with the elementary school librarian coming to the high school one day per week.
