Penobscot Nursing Home Archive

In our mission as your community information service to help readers stay abreast of the issues regarding the Penobscot Nursing Home, we have created this special archive of stories, letters to the editor and guest columns. It will be updated regularly as we publish more on this topic.

For more than four years, Penobscot Nursing Home has had its share of challenges. In 2008, the facility was taken into receivership by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services after what the Department termed as “financial problems,” and it has been in receivership ever since. In April, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services petitioned the Kennebec County Superior Court to close the facility, sell the licenses for its “bed rights” to a for-profit company seeking to construct a new facility in Bucksport. The news, which came as a surprise to Penobscot officials and others in neighboring communities, is being challenged in an attempt to keep Penobscot Nursing Home from being closed and its patients relocated to Bucksport.
