Elkington earns good marks in third year at Union 76 helm
Central office budget approved, up 0.4 percent

In his third year as superintendent for Union 76—Brooklin, Sedgwick and Deer Isle-Stonington school districts—Chris Elkington again received praise for his performance during his annual evaluation. His contract was extended through 2021-22, with a 2019-20 salary increase of 2 percent, bringing his annual pay to $114,080, at a December 17 meeting.
“His dedication to his job, to those under him, to students and to the communities he serves is tremendous,” Union 76 Board Chairman Mike Sealander (Brooklin) said afterwards.
Elkington was hired in 2016, the third superintendent in five years, with the understanding that part of his job would be to explore ways the union could dissolve. At that time, the Brooklin and Sedgwick school boards were each exploring ways to break free.
But, as a monthly school board agenda item, those discussions faded as Elkington has worked to streamline and share services among the three schools while simultaneously providing the two smaller schools with options and information on the withdrawal process.
“I have not been in discussion in Brooklin about leaving the union for quite some time,” Sealander noted.
Elkington has had his share of crises to deal with, from Deer Isle-Stonington’s dilemma on how and where to place its high school students, given the multi-million dollar repairs needed at the high school and declining number of students, to a first-year DISHS teacher’s arrest last May for sexual contact with students, incidents that allegedly began, according to court documents, in December 2017.
“He has had his foot to the floor since he started three years ago,” Sealander said.
Elkington also capped the central office’s 2019-20 budget at an increase of 0.4 percent or $2,130, for a total $575,944 budget that won unanimous approval from the board.
Under the cost-sharing agreement, Brooklin will pay 15.23 percent or $87,716, Sedgwick 23.87 percent or $137,477, and CSD #13 60.9 percent or $350,749.
Staff employment contracts were extended through 2019-20, with 2.5 percent raises across the board. Sealander was reelected as chairman, with Jane Osborne (DI-S) as vice chairman and Skip Greenlaw (DI-S) secretary.
