GSA announces honor parts for graduating class
George Stevens Academy has announced honor parts for the Class of 2018. Seventy-two seniors are expected to graduate in the class. Commencement exercises will be held on Sunday, June 10, at 1 p.m. This year’s graduation speaker will be GSA alumna Samantha Haskell of Blue Hill. She graduated from GSA in 2005 and last year became the owner of Blue Hill Books.
Eliza Grace Broughton - valedictorian
Valedictorian Eliza Grace Broughton is the daughter of Matt Broughton of Blue Hill and Jen and Sam Winter of Ellsworth. Eliza participated in Cross Country (4 years), Outdoor Track (4), Indoor Track (2), and played Band (1). She has attended Blue Hill Peninsula Summer Track; studied viola, guitar, and oboe; volunteered at Silent Sidekicks; and worked at El El Frijoles. She was the recipient of the Williams College Book Award, and was captain of both the Cross Country and Track teams. Eliza aspires to hike the Appalachian Trail, run a marathon, and travel and explore the world. She will be attending Middlebury College in the fall to study psychology.
Maira Vandiver - salutatorian
Salutatorian Maria Vandiver is the daughter of Marianne and David Vandiver of Penobscot. Maira was a member of Planet Pan (4 years), Drama Club (4), and the Gender Sexuality Alliance (4). She has taught Rhythm Rockets and Improv Youth Theater. She won State All Cast Awards (3), was a member of the Pan Soaltion steelband that placed 23rd worldwide, and she received the University of Rochester Book Award. Maira looks forward to paying off her student debts. She will be attending Guilford College to study Theater and Community and Justice.
Yian “Albert” Zhang - first honor essayist
First Honor Essayist Yian “Albert” Zhang is the son of Dingfeng Zhang and Weihong Lu of Shanghai, China. He was a member of the Cross Country (2 years) and Track (1) teams, the Chess Club (3), and Band (1). Albert will attend McGill University in the fall to study Physics. He hopes to become a writer and a poet.
Ellie Frances Gellerson - second honor essayist
Second Honor Essayist Ellie Frances Gellerson is the daughter of Tera and Todd Gellerson of Blue Hill. Ellie was a member of the Swim team (4 years). She received the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award. She hopes to pursue a master’s degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture, or a Ph.D. in Oceanography. Ellie will be attending Maine Maritime Academy in the fall to study Marine Science.
