Haystack announces exhibition, evening programs

Haystack’s first of three summer exhibitions, Matthew Shlian: Recent Work in Folded Paper, will be on view June 1-July 9 at Haystack’s Center for Community Programs. Visual artist and paper engineer, Matthew Shlian, who will be a visiting artist at Haystack from June 22-July 3, creates kinetic sculptures by manipulating paper through folding, scoring, pleating, and other techniques. Static and moving pieces will be on display. The Center, located at 22 Church Street in Deer Isle village (across from Bar Harbor Bank), will be open Wednesday, and Friday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m. for the duration of the show. Free admission.

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts’ Summer Evening Programs Series includes studio walk-throughs around Haystack’s campus by artists sharing their work, ideas, and artistic influences and end-of-session auctions in the Gateway Auditorium. These programs are open to the public, and begin at 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) and are held in the Gateway Auditorium on Haystack’s campus.

On Monday, June 9, blacksmith David Clemons and ceramic artist Peter Beasceker will present their work.

On Tuesday, June 10, fiber artist Piper Shepard and book artist Eileen Wallace will share their work. Shepard is a textile artist and professor at Maryland Institute College of Art. Wallace is a Lecturer of Printmaking and Book Arts at the University of Georgia.

On Wednesday, June 11, metalsmith Cappy Counard and wood artist Stephen Whittlesey will present their work. Counard has been a professor of Metals/Jewelry at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania since 1999. Whittlesey is a studio furniture maker, sculptor, and blueberry farmer.

On Monday, June 16, the first session technical assistants—artists who aid the instructors in leading classes—will present their work. On Tuesday, June 17, Haystack staff, many of whom are also studio artists, will present their work. An end-of-session studio walk-through and auction will take place on Thursday, June 19, with studios open at 7:30 p.m. for self-guided tours, followed by an end-of-session auction—preview begins at 8 p.m. and auction will begin at 8:15 p.m.
