George Stevens Academy is on an upswing on the courts this season, with both the boys and girls tennis teams undefeated.

The boys singles and doubles teams haven’t even dropped an individual match.

“Great coaching,” joked boys coach Larry Gray. “[It’s the] high level of performance by the players.”

With wins this week against Sumner and Orono, both teams are 8-0 and holding the top spot in the Heal Point Standings.

However, neither team will face top-ranked teams, like Piscataquis and Mattanawcook on the boys’ side and Piscataquis on the girls’, until—and unless—they make it to tournament play, as well as other northern teams that could easily pull up their rankings as the season rolls forward.

“It is not uncommon for us to face teams in the tournament we do not see during the regular season,” said Gray. “Quite often we play Madawaska or Fort Kent.”

Add in the fact that some teams have played significantly fewer matches than the Eagles and the season still holds over a half dozen matches, nothing is ever certain. The Eagles still have to face Class B team Mount Desert Island (5-1 boys; 5-0 girls) on May 15 at MDI and Ellsworth (4-0 boys; 3-0 girls) later in the month.

But looking ahead to the tournament matches the first week of June it seems worth betting that the Eagles will be there.

This week, Alex Heilner, Tate Yoder and Nate Boechat and Maggie Keating, Sophia Chen & Adrian Van der Eb are all headed for the singles tournament.

Eagles track at Bangor

The Eagles boys came in fourth in a meet against six teams at Bangor on May 12, with a first-place win in the 4x400 meter relay (Devlin Valle, Philip Shaheen, Devon Oppedisano and John Hassett). The girls placed fifth but posted first-place finishes by Alice Dillon in the 800 meter run and Brier-Rose Werner in the high jump.
