Welcome to Summer on the Peninsula 2014
Summertime, and the living is easy…Our summer edition of the Seasonal Guide highlights ways to explore and enjoy life in our 10 towns.
From Castine and Penobscot, through the Blue Hill Peninsula and down to the island towns of Deer Isle and Stonington, the summer months offer an astounding array of events, whether in the woods, on the water, or on the move from museum to concert to gallery to restaurant.
In this issue…
What makes for a destination hike? Our new nature columnist, Peter Cooperdock, explores the natural beauty of three trails that wind their way from their starting points to finish at a particular spot, instead of looping around to the trail head. If you miss any of the flora, rocks and scenic views on the way, you’ll have a second chance on the return trip.
Good food, good lobster… For the purist or the gourmet, lobster adapts. We spotlight a few different ways to enjoy it, with cooking tips, and then throw in a few fun facts about lobsters and lobstermen. Feel like dining out? In our Cuisine Connection, we connect you with all the restaurants, cafés and drive-ins and take-outs that open their doors wide in the summertime and fill their menus with fresh seafood and, as much as possible, local, fresh fare.
Where to go, what to do. We highlight local Independence Day celebrations and more in First & Foremost, along with vital information, like where to find wireless, a restroom or a hospital. Looking to enjoy a walk on the beach or slip a kayak into the river? See our list of trails, beaches and landings in the Outdoor Handbook. Or fill a rainy day with a tour of local art galleries or an indoor concert—we list them all in our Arts Guide. Our piece on Societies, Libraries & Museums is a guide to exploring the local history and culture of our 10 towns.

Visit our Around Town section and, always, use our Community Calendar at penobscotbaypress.com or in any of our three community newspapers, Castine Patriot, The Weekly Packet and Island Ad-Vantages, for up-to-date information on events in our 10 towns and beyond.
