Callahan Mine update
Callahan Mine annual meeting set for July 29
by Faith DeAmbrose
For the last 11 years, representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency based in Boston have made the trek to Brooksville to discuss the state of the Callahan Mine Superfund site in Cape Rosier. EPA representatives Ed Hathaway and Pam Harting-Barrat will be at the Brooksville Town Office meeting room on Tuesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. to provide an update of site activities.
According to Hathaway, the PCB and residential property cleanup program was completed in 2013. The only activities planned for 2014 are site inspections, some limited site maintenance, and sampling. The design for the remaining cleanup activities will continue into 2015. Wells to facilitate drainage of the tailings impoundment may be installed in 2015.
