Penobscot woman takes beef recipe cook-off for third year
For the third year in a row, and the fourth time since 2005, Peggy Wood of Penobscot won the beef recipe cook-off at the Blue Hill Fair livestock ring on Friday, August 30.
From among six entries which included chili, Southwest stroganoff and meatloaf, Wood’s “Crock Pot Pizza” took the prize.
All entries must contain beef as one of the ingredients. Wood’s winning recipe will be published in next year’s fair schedule.
This year’s judges were Chris Curtis and Greg Wilson. After the two deliberated, those present were asked to give the beef recipes a taste.
A new competition was also held simultaneously with the beef recipe contest. A 4-H cake contest celebrating the 100th anniversary of 4-H in Maine. All 4-H clubs and schools were encouraged to enter a cake.
Rob Eaton, president of the Blue Hill Fair Association, judged the cakes. The winner was a chocolate cake with mint filling made by Darren Easler, 9, of Beech Hill and the 4-H Explorers Club of Hancock.
The cakes were judged on taste, creativity of decoration and how well the cakes were suited to the theme. All cakes needed to be made from scratch.
