Spotlight on: Lumberjacking

How fast can you use a bucksaw? A cross saw? How far can you throw an axe? Discover the lumberjack inside you—or just come to watch the sawdust fly—at the Brooklin-Sedgwick Historical Society annual October log sawing and axe throwing contest.

Lumberjacking can be serious business—and it can be a lot of fun. With divisions for men, women and youth, the annual event brings a crowd to the grounds of the Daniel Merrill House in Sedgwick.

Experienced and newcomers are welcome. Last year, Jennifer Trowbridge tried her hand at the bucksaw competition for the first time and won. “I heard someone say ‘focus.’ I heard someone say ‘slow and smooth,’” she said after her winning turn, proving that the best tool may be listening well.

When: Saturday, October 12, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Where: Daniel Merrill House, Rte. 172, Sedgwick
