Price change for Island Ad-Vantages, Castine Patriot and Weekly Packet
by Nat Barrows
The recent session of the Maine Legislature passed a law applying a 5.5 percent sales taxes to periodical publications, including newspapers.
Effective October 1, the 5.5 percent tax will be charged when a newspaper is purchased, making the total cost 95 cents.
This new sales tax will also apply to all of our newspaper subscriptions sold in the state of Maine. So we have raised our subscription price to include the new tax, and to cover postal rate increases. We have also raised the price of our out-of-state subscriptions because of postal rate increases. These subscription price increases will be effective with the next renewal notice received by subscribers.
We all know we are in challenging economic times during which price increases are difficult. But we ask for your understanding and continued patronage of your local community newspaper.
