George Stevens Academy announced the following Honors parts for the Class of 2013:
Valedictorian Nolan Schroth Ellsworth is the son of Jennifer Schroth and Jon Ellsworth of Brooklin. Nolan has been a member of the Theater Club for three years, editor of The Procrastinator for three years, and a member of National Honor Society. He participated in Haystack’s site-based program for two years and was on the Track team for one year. Nolan was elected to the Maine Drama Festival’s “All Festival Cast” for each of the past three years. He is the recipient of the Williams College Book Award in his junior year. Nolan will be attending Middlebury College in the fall to study writing, literature, and theater.
Salutatorian Lorna Lilly Stephens is the daughter of Paige Lilly of Blue Hill, and Robert and Tina Stephens of Blue Hill. Lorna played in the Band for four years, Jazz Combo for four years, and was All State Jazz Chair last year. She performed in the fall musical and the winter’s One Act play all four years. She wrote for the The Procrastinator for two years and was a member of National Honor Society. She received the Dartmouth Book Award in her junior year, and is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Lorna will be attending Lawrence University in the fall where she will major in vocal performance and sociology.
There are two First Honor Essayists.
First Honor Essayist Mary Elizabeth Prescott is the daughter of Karrie and Russell Prescott of Penobscot. She played basketball, soccer, and softball all four years, and was also a member of the GSA Band for all four years. She was a member of Community Action Group for two years and Student Council for four years, and was elected to the National Honor Society. Mary was awarded the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Honors Medal and the University of Maine Junior Book Award. In her senior year, she was All-Academic Team in basketball and soccer, and PVC All Star in basketball, and as a junior was 2nd Team All-Star for softball. Mary will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute where she will study environmental engineering.
First Honor Essayist Gavin Lavoie Rogers is the son of Gaye Marie and Horatio Rogers III of Penobscot. Gavin played baseball for four years, basketball for two years, soccer for one year, and ran cross country for two years. He played in the Jazz Band for two years, Jazz Combo for four years, Band Secretary his sophomore year, and Band Vice President last year. He participated in theater for two years. Gavin was awarded two 2012 State Jazz Fest MVP’s, a National Merit Scholar Commendation, 2012 PVC All-Academic Team (soccer), and 2012 All PVC Designated Hitter, Second Team (baseball). Gavin will attend college in the fall to study business or communications.
There also are two Second Honor Essayists.
Second Honor Essayist John Robert Ciampa is the son of Carolyn and David Ciampa of Castine. John played varsity tennis for two years and received a Phi Beta Kappa certificate of achievement. John will attend Boston College in the fall to study liberal arts.
Second Honor Essayist William Tyler Navarre is the son of Keli Gancos of Ellsworth. William has been captain of the Math Team for four years, captain of the Science Bowl for two years, treasurer of the Procrastinator for two years, Boys State 2012 Speaker of the House, and Student Ambassador for one year. He received the Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award last year. William will be attending M.I.T. in the fall where he will study mathematics and computer science.
Graduation remarks will be delivered by William R. Case, social studies teacher who joined the GSA faculty in 2008.
Seventy-seven seniors are expected to graduate in the Class of 2013. Commencement exercises will be held on Sunday, June 9, at 1 p.m. on the front campus, or in the gymnasium in the event of inclement weather.
