With only a five-member team at the Western Wrestling Regional Championship, the George Stevens Academy team placed eighth in competition with 13 other teams. The Eagles earned 34 points, placing just below Bucksport, at 35.5, and ahead of John Bapst and Orono, who earned 16 and 15 points.
But wrestling is also a one-on-one sport. GSA senior Jordan Lord followed up his spectacular showing at the PVCs the week before by placing first in the 138-pound class with three out of three match wins. Junior Henry Bowden, new to the team this year, battled to a fourth-place, 1-2 finish in the 126-pound class, after losing his first match.
Senior Alex Turanski (145) and sophomore Dillon Morey (152) lost their first bout, but won their first consolation rounds. Senior Tim Allen (220) went 0-3.
The state championships at the Augusta Civic Center are on Saturday, February 9, and GSA will be there. It is the last match for Lord, Turanski and Allen in their high school wrestling careers.
