Surry Fire Department raffle centered on community needs
At the monthly meeting of the Surry Fire Department full membership, several decisions were made which demonstrated true community interest and involvement, according to a news release from the department.
As stated in the release, Surry Fire Department has enormous concerns for the safety and well-being of the children of Surry and surrounding area communities. Through surveys taken, it has been found that many residences are still without smoke detectors, which have been proved to save lives.
In past years, SFD has maintained a presence at their booth at the Blue Hill Fair; however, due to the very high costs of booth space and maintaining the booth, a decision was made to discontinue the booth this year. The booth has been a way of raising funds for the department by selling raffle tickets and other items. Members this year have elected to cut excessive costs but to instead concentrate on an all-out-effort to support the Annual Fire Prevention and Safety Week, October 6-12, by presenting each child in area schools with a free smoke detector to be taken home by them. In order to do this, as much funds as possible must be raised through the department’s two chosen events: a one-of-a-kind raffle and a grand open house.
Each raffle ticket, with a limit of 1,000 tickets, will have 25 chances to win. Prizes to be awarded include five 1st place prizes ($200 gift certificates to area grocery stores); 10 2nd place prizes ($100 gift certificates to area restaurants); and 10 3rd place prizes ($50 gasoline cards).
Twenty-five winners will be drawn and notified just before Thanksgiving, November 26. Proceeds will go toward the SFD community programs and the Children’s Fire Prevention and Safety Program. SFD is asking the public and businesses to support its endeavor and goal of presenting every child throughout the area with a home smoke detector. Firefighters, businesses and other supporters, where raffle tickets may be purchased, will be announced soon.
