Voters OK grant application for WESMAC expansion

by Rich Hewitt

Voters have approved an application for a $300,000 state grant that would help fund expansion at a local boatyard. The vote at the special town meeting on Friday, August 9, was unanimous. An estimated 20 people attended the single-issue meeting. The grant from the state Community Development Block Grant program would provide a portion of the funding for local boat builder WESMAC to expand operations at the existing boatyard that will allow them to hire at least 10 additional new employees. The plan calls for WESMAC to purchase new molds for its 46-foot boats, upgrade the heating and air-handling system and to add the sales and service of outboard motors to their business. The remainder of the funds for the project, estimated at about $670,000, will come from a loan through the Small Business Administration and from private funds. If the state Department of Economic and Community Development approves the grant, the funds could be available sometime in September.
