Blue Hill team takes second in national boules championship

by Faith DeAmbrose

Despite the ominous forecasts, the weather cooperated and the public came out to cheer the six teams who participated in this year’s Federation Petanque USA Women’s World Qualifier on September 8 and 9. Eighteen players from California, Florida and Maine battled it out at the Maine Boules Club’s courts at Webber’s Boatyard in Blue Hill.

According to Maine Boules Club President Mia Kanazawa, the team from California with Narin Garrett, captain, Erin McTaggart and Barbara Hall prevailed. “Congratulations to them!” she said.

In second place from Maine and Florida are Cynthia Stroud, captain, Susan Shaw and Jo Ella Manalan.

Tied for Third Place are the Maine team of Mia Kanazawa, captain, Gina DeJoy and Kate Unkel and California’s Tish Harris, captain, Lisa Vaughn and Carolina Jones.

In addition to the two days of play, all those who participated were treated to a lobster dinner put on by The Boatyard Grill.

The winners will represent the United States in the Women’s World Championship tentatively scheduled to be held in Tunisia in 2013.
