GSA Eagles host Becton Cup regatta

George Stevens Academy sailed in wet, miserable conditions at the second annual Becton Cup—the Maine State Women’s Championship—on October 14, playing host to a field of eight southern and mid-coast Maine high school teams at Maine Maritime Academy.

The Eagles came in seventh in steady rain and a shifting wind that began light but built steadily throughout the eight races. The fleet of 420s sailed from Castine Harbor, with regatta pro Butch Minson changing the course as the wind shifted.

With skipper Cecily Page working through a soccer injury to her leg, it was difficult for her and crew Clover Slagle to get to optimum sailing speed, said coach Patrick Haugen.

Falmouth placed first, followed by Southern Maine and Mount Desert Island.

The Becton Cup is named after Jean Coggan Becton, a life-long sailing enthusiast of Blue Hill and Florida, who won the Maine Women’s Sailing Championship in 1936 and supported local sailing programs in Castine and Blue Hill until her death, at age 91, in 2008.
