The boys soccer team lost their last game to number one undefeated Bangor Christian 4-0. This was a much better effort than the score would portray, as we battled them even in the first half to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Goalie Tyler Robbins had a very active first half making many grade A saves.
The field was wet and muddy so we had a hard time getting good kicks to clear the zone. We did have a couple shots on goal, but BC kept the ball in our end most of the time. In the second half, BC finally broke through and scored several goals, out shooting us in the match 42-8.
We held our heads high at the end of the game because we had made a good effort against a great team. Just to give some perspective, BC has only given up four goals all season, and none in their last 11 games.
If you just look at the 1-11-1 record of this team, you might think that this wasn’t much of a season. However, despite the poor win-loss record, we certainly could score goals. We scored 26 goals for the season, including five games of four goals. Pat Duddy was a leading striker in Class D with 18 goals to his credit.
With a short bench to begin with, we faced adversity all season with injuries and eligibility where at times we had no bench or not even the required 11 players. Fortunately we had several freshmen who stepped up to play well at the varsity level from the start. It was a trial by fire with everyone getting a lot of playing time and playing many different positions necessitated by all the injuries.
This team not only committed to play together, but they played very hard in their roles. They never gave up and erased several goal deficits more than once with their attitude. They knew it would be an uphill battle from the start, and they never wavered in their working hard to get better.
Many of the teams on our schedule will graduate significant numbers of starters while no one on our team will graduate next year. Building on the momentum we made at the end of the season and the confidence gained when we saw we could compete, I am confident that we will rise out of the ashes of this season and be a playoff contender next year.
