Junior Alex Heilner competed in the state individual championships on October 13 at Natanis, hitting nine strokes over par. As a top-ten finisher, he brought home a medal—his final score of 81 placed him ninth out of the top 33 golfers in the state. Heilner is the only golfer in recent GSA history to finish in the top ten, said Coach Dwayne Carter. “Alex played consistently all day and stayed focused on each shot,” Carter said. “It is a great accomplishment for Alex and one that he can build upon for next year.”

The Eagles cross-country teams have been “gaining experience throughout the year and have been improving steadily,” said Coach Erich Reed after the PVC meet in Ellsworth on October 13.

That experience paid off for the girls, who placed second in the small school division, with sophomore Madison Cole placing ninth, at 24:08.44, followed by freshman Brooke Wentworth, who came in 12th at 24:54.30.

The boys, who were missing top GSA runner Sam Stankhe, placed fifth. Freshmen Oliver Broughton and Devlin Valle were top runners, coming in 13th (18:52.74) and 14th (18:53.38), respectively, on the three-mile run for small schools.

The team is “on course to have a strong chance to make states,” said Reed.

The regional qualifying meet will be held on Saturday, October 20, in Belfast.
