On Saturday, October 13, students and families gathered at the Sedgwick Elementary School for the school’s annual Applefest. Bright skies, cool weather and a breeze kept most bundled up, but still able to enjoy many of the activities. These activities included sampling apple chips, apple sauce and warmed apple cider; pressing fresh apple cider; crafting with apples—such as using a painted half-apple to press circles and shapes onto canvas tote bags. Children also made their own apple turnovers, baked inside the school in batches. Samantha Simmons, 10, spent several minutes rolling out her dough before filling it with apple mixture. “I like this,” said Simmons. “I enjoy rolling the dough out.” Students also played on the playground, coming together for activities like an “Apple Relay,” which had students “speed walk” a course while balancing an apple on a spoon. Students who dropped apples would have to spin around in place five times before continuing. Upcoming events at the Sedgwick Elementary School include a “Mad Scientist Halloween” evening on Friday, October 26, as well as the school’s traditional “literary parade” in school on October 31. |
