DIS School board hires library coordinator

On Tuesday, October 2, the Community School District board filled three positions for the school year.

First, the board hired Jill Lopes as the half-time library coordinator, a position replacing the half-time librarian cut during the 2012-13 budget process (approved 5-0).

The board also hired Sarah Cole as a half-time ed tech and Mike Wood as a part time adult education assistant director.

High school principal Todd West reported improved SAT scores, with the highest scores in nearly all categories since all seniors began taking the test in 2005-06.

Superintendent Mark Jenkins shared final enrollment figures for the year. The system has a total of 356 students, with 220 at the elementary school and 136 at the high school. The total on October 1, 2011 was 359.

The central office project—where a portion of the high school is being remodeled into a suite of offices to house the Union 76 administration offices—is moving forward. The first round of bids were far more than what the board had originally budgeted. The plans were scaled down and sent out again. Bids on the streamlined project are due October 11, and the board’s facilities committee will meet to discuss the project shortly thereafter.

Student council representative Sarah Wilson introduced Emmi Trundy, who will now serve as the new student council representative.

The board next meets Wednesday, November 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the high school cafeteria.
