by Jessica Brophy Union 76 board members from Deer Isle, Stonington, Sedgwick and Brooklin met Monday, November 5, to discuss union-wide policies and to take a first pass at the budget for the central office. The central office includes the superintendent and special education director, as well as other administration such as payroll and teacher/staff contract negotiations. According to meeting minutes, the budget is likely to remain more or less flat. In a follow-up interview, Superintendent Mark Jenkins said the draft is still in flux because staff contracts are currently under negotiation. Cost savings from the central office move into the Deer Isle-Stonington High School will not be fully realized, as the move is not likely to happen until mid-year. Next year’s budget will reflect the full savings. Construction work has begun on the project. In other business, the Union 76 board discussed the need to update the weighted vote tally to the numbers in the 2010 census. Jenkins said the weight of each town’s vote is unlikely to change very much. Likewise, the board is revisiting the cost-sharing formula, which determines how much of the central office costs are paid for by each town. Jenkins said it is unlikely that formula will be changed, but policy dictates it be reviewed every few years. The current formula takes into account the amount of personnel at each school (and therefore the amount of time needed to negotiate contracts), the amount of special education enrollment and the amount of time the superintendent spends in meetings. The board also discussed updating the superintendent’s performance review process. No votes or action were taken; all votes, including the approval of the central office budget, will take place Monday, December 3, at 6 p.m. at Sedgwick Elementary. |
