DIS CSD board hires second grade teacher

In a brief special meeting on Tuesday, May 22, prior to a Union 76 meeting at Sedgwick Elementary School, the CSD board hired a second grade teacher.

Amber Hawkins, a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, was hired unanimously (6-0) by the board to teach second grade.

“We had an amazing interview with this unusually gifted teacher,” said board member Skip Greenlaw.

The board also agreed to hire architect Mike Sealander to draw up plans to convert a portion of the high school into a space for the central office and superintendent, at a cost of $1,800. A plan for the space had been requested by members of the Union 76 school boards before a vote on whether to move the central office from its current location in Sargentville to the Deer Isle-Stonington High School. The board approved the hire, 5-1 (Stephen York).

The board also accepted a donation of an iPad by the local autism awareness group Making Strides for use by a student in the special ed. program.
