The popular program delivering local vegetables and library books in Sedgwick will return in July. Every Friday from July 6-August 24, the Magic Food Bus will make five stops in Sedgwick to deliver library books and locally grown vegetables for children and adults. Sedgwick Elementary School librarian Margaret Bixby will be driving the Magic Food Bus again, but this year it will be a rented, maroon cargo van. Along with a variety of in-season vegetables, the Magic Food Bus will distribute recipes, general storage and preparation tips, and information on local farms. The vegetables are provided free of charge (donations are accepted, but not required). This year the Sargentville Public Library is supplying library books for adults in addition to the children’s books provided by the Sedgwick Elementary School. This summer the Magic Food Bus will be closely tied to the new Ready by 21 Summer Math and Reading Challenge, with age appropriate math games and supplies for a fun summer reading program available at every stop. The Magic Food Bus is expanding to Deer Isle and Stonington this summer, where it will make stops on Thursdays and will be driven by Island Institute Fellow Wes Norton. The Magic Food Bus started last summer in Sedgwick as a partnership between Healthy Peninsula and the Sedgwick School Library. Healthy Peninsula was working to improve access to local vegetables and the school librarian, Margaret Bixby, wanted to improve children’s access to books over the summer. “We were pleased with the success of the Magic Food Bus last summer and are delighted to be returning to Sedgwick this year,” said Healthy Peninsula director Amy Vaughn. “Margaret Bixby had the great idea for the Magic Food Bus and several community groups and local farms came together to make it a reality.” The project is funded through grants from the Maine Health Access Foundation and the Community Health Alliance. On Fridays in July and August, beginning July 6, the Magic Food Bus will make the following stops: West Sedgwick at the corner of Sis Porter Road and Porcupine Lane (10 a.m.), Astbury parking lot at the corner of Ridge Road and Route 15 (11:20 a.m.), Benjamin River Apartments (1:20 p.m.), El El Frijoles parking lot (2:40 p.m.) and Sedgwick Elementary School parking lot (4 p.m.). All stops will last one hour. For more information, please contact Amy Vaughn, director, Healthy Peninsula: avaughn@healthypeninsula.org, 359-1441, healthypeninsula.org |
