Brooklin Girl Scouts celebrate 100 years of scouting in D.C.

by Jessica Brophy

The sale of 1,600 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, a bottle drive, a yard sale and donations from community members fueled a five-day trip to the nation’s capitol for eight Girl Scouts of Troop 625 to celebrate 100 years of scouting.

According to Aimee Claybaugh, one of the five mothers who accompanied the scouts, highlights of the trip included a tour of the White House, meeting Senator Susan Collins and getting a tour of the Capitol with a member of Collins’ staff and visiting many museums and monuments. The trip lasted from Wednesday, June 6, to Sunday, June 10.

On Saturday, June 9, the scouts participated in the “Rock the Mall” gathering of nearly 250,000 Girl Scouts, family and alumnae in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouts.

“It was an amazing experience to realize that there are so many girls across the country that are a part of our scouting sisterhood,” said troop leader Robyn Sealander. “It’s so easy to feel somewhat isolated here in our little corner of Maine.”

According to the Girl Scouts of the U.S. website, Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low founded the scouts in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia. Today, more than 3.2 million girls and adults are Girl Scout members, and more than 59 million are alumnae.

Claybaugh and Sealander said they are “grateful to everyone who contributed to the money-earning efforts, it really made it feel like it was a team effort.”
