News Feature
by Faith DeAmbrose With a roughly 60-40 percent split, incumbent Ralph Chapman (D-Brooksville) beat Jim Schatz (D-Blue Hill) to clinch the Democratic nomination and face Republican Gay Leach in the November general election. Chapman carried his hometown of Brooksville, as well as Sedgwick, Castine, and Schatz’s hometown of Blue Hill. Schatz garnered more votes in Surry and Penobscot. After the election, Chapman said he was pleased to see that the local turnout far exceeded the statewide numbers and was “pleased to be on the winning side” of the turnout. November’s race may be a little bit like déjà vu seeing that only two years ago the two faced each other in an election so close that a recount was needed to confirm Chapman as the overall winner. A recount determined Chapman won the race by a margin of only 35 votes. Over the past two years, said Chapman, the people of House District 37 “have gotten to know me better, and have had a chance to see my record. Gay will have to show what she’s done in the past two years.” He said he looks forward to discussing the issues with Leach over the next few months. Leach received 497 votes Tuesday to win the Republican nomination. |
