News Feature
by Jessica Brophy Emma Creighton, a woman with ties to Deer Isle and the Blue Hill Peninsula, sailed 4,200 miles single-handedly across the Atlantic in a 21-foot boat last year. Now, Creighton is sailing across the Atlantic again in the Transat Quebec-St. Malo, from Quebec, Canada to St. Malo, France. This time she’s one of a crew of four on the Class 40 Bodacious Dream, captained by David Rearick. This is the first American boat to participate in the race, which has run every four years since 1984. The race began on Sunday, July 22, and usually takes from 11 to 16 days to complete the 3,300 mile course up the St. Lawrence River and across the Atlantic. Creighton and crew will compete against 21 other boats in the Class 40, and an additional five boats in the “open” class. In an email, Creighton said she’s never sailed with anyone on this crew before, and she is the only sailor on board who has sailed across the Atlantic. A Class 40 boat, Bodacious Dream conforms to “box” rules about its design. The boat was designed in New Zealand, according to bodaciousdream.com. Last year, Creighton finished 19th in her class in the 4200-mile Mini Transat. In late May of this year, Creighton and a co-skipper took fifth place in the Atlantic Cup, the only U.S. Class 40 sailing race. To follow Creighton’s career, search for “Emma’s Sailing Exploits” on Facebook. To track Bodacious Dream in the Transat Quebec-St. Malo race, visit tranatquebecstmalo.com. The site has an option for English in the upper-right hand corner. The boat itself also has a website where updates will be posted, bodaciousdream.com. |
