DISHS Boys beat Washburn in playoffs

by Jack Scott

The boys basketball team played a great game to beat Washburn, 67-57, in their quarterfinal game in Bangor. Perhaps inspired by the impressive singing of “The Star Spangled Banner” from Emily Cormier, or just because nobody gave us a chance, we got off to a strong start and never trailed in the game.

We shot well and led 19-11 after one quarter, helped by 8 points from Tim Cormier. About mid-way through the second, we stretched our lead to 28-16, but several turnovers gave Washburn some hope, as they came back to trail only 28-24. We closed out the half with baskets from Hayden Ciomei and Connor Morey to lead 32-24. As he was the focus of the defense, Sam Grindle only had 4 of our 32 points, but he passed to Hayden Ciomei, Tim Cormier, and Connor Morey, who picked up the scoring.

Playing solid defense, we stretched our lead to 49-29 in the third before Washburn put in two 3-pointers and caused some turnovers to shrink the lead to 49-36 after three quarters. They got it as close as 10, but we always came up with an answer. We led 57-46 with two minutes left and they had to foul us.

Though we handled their pressure pretty well all game, we really came through at the end. We made 10 of 14 foul shots and protected the ball very well. With a minute left, the score was 59-50, but Hayden Ciomei, Nathan Davis, and Sam Grindle combined for eight of 10 foul shots to close out any comeback hopes.

The key to this game was that it was a total team win. Good defense from everyone kept Washburn off balance as well as our having four players in double figures. Everyone contributed and played their roles effectively. Hayden Ciomei led us with 20, Sam Grindle, 17, Tim Cormier, 14, and Connor Morey, 10 (from the home team book).

In the earlier preliminary game, the boys beat Bangor Christian, 49-31. Similar to the regular season game, we had a slow start and trailed 13-8 after one quarter, after being down 13-2. We recovered to lead 26-21 at the half. After a rough third period where our lead dwindled to 33-29, we mixed up our defense and quickly got a comfortable lead by causing turnovers. We held BC to 2 points in the fourth quarter to get the win.

It took a while to get going, but once we did we were able to take control of the game. This wasn’t an easy win, but we did what we had to do, especially in the fourth quarter. Bangor Christian is a pesky team and dangerous if they are able to hang around. Sam Grindle led us with 18, Hayden Ciomei, 11, and Kevin Melanio, 7.
