Single car accident closes Mines Road

Wet and slushy road conditions contributed to a single-car accident on Mines Road in Blue Hill in the morning hours of Monday, December 10, forcing the closure of the roadway for more than an hour.

Tabitha Smith, 21, of Deer Isle was driving a Volvo that slid off the road and into a utility pole around 8 a.m., causing the pole to snap and lay beside the car. Live wires draped over the vehicle prevented the immediate extraction of Smith who, according to Blue Hill Fire Chief Denny Robertson, was given “hot packs” to keep warm while crews from Bangor Hydro arrived at the scene and cut the electricity.

Robertson said that the fire departments of Blue Hill and Sedgwick worked together to keep the road closed while Bangor Hydro replaced the pole.

Smith was transported to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital where she was later released without significant injury.

Emergency personnel were able to get one side of the roadway opened within an hour and traffic remained slow while cleanup occurred.

Despite the very slippery conditions during the morning commute, Robertson said it was the only accident that the Blue Hill Volunteer Fire Department had to attend to.
