Focus on Education
The school day at the elementary school is from 7:55 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. On Fridays, the school hours are 7:55 a.m. to 1:40 p.m.
The school day at the high school is from 7:50 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. On Fridays, the school hours are 7:50 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The menu for the first week of elementary school is Tuesday, grilled chicken burger or sandwich, vegetable, cookie milk; Wednesday, shepard’s pie with roll or sandwich, vegetable, fruit milk; Thursday, cheese or veggie pizza or sandwich, vegetable, cookie milk; Friday, taco made with chicken or refried beans, vegetable, fruit milk.
At the high school, lunch prices are $2.50 for full price; 40¢ reduced price. Milk is 25¢.
Applications for free and reduced price meals will be sent home at the beginning of school.
Kimberly Thomas from Gilford, N.H. has been named the middle level reading teacher for DI-S Elementary School. She holds a bachelor of science degree from St. Joseph’s College. While there, she had experiences in a number of area elementary schools in Standish, Gray, Raymond, Windham and Portland.
Deborah Ladd brings a wealth of professional experience to the fifth-grade position at DI-S Elementary School. She has taught most elementary grade levels and most recently has been the middle school principal in Dover-Foxcroft. She earned both her bachelor and master degrees from the University of Maine.
Amber Hawkins spent her first professional year teaching middle school aged students at an international school in Daegu, South Korea. Now, she will be one of the second-grade teachers at DI-S Elementary School. She is a 2011 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington.
Mary Penford of Deer Isle will be the new high school math teacher at DI-S High School. Mary has had many educational experiences over the years and has done extensive volunteer work for the Deer Isle-Stonington schools. She earned her bachelor’s from Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. and her master’s from State University of Albany.
Darcey Stevenson, formally of Wiscasset, will be the new high school resource room teacher for DISHS. She has earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Syracuse University in New York. She has been a life skills teacher at Wiscasset High School for the past ten years
Elizabeth Kyzer is the new K-12 music teacher for the DI-S Consolidated School District. Along with four years of public school teaching, she has had many musical experiences and positions. She is coming to us from Hawley, Pa.
Katharine Fodnaess will be the new K-12 nurse for the Deer Isle-Stonington schools. Katharine has a great deal of school and other medical experiences and most recently has been the district nurse for Searsport schools. Besides being a registered nurse, she also holds business and education degrees.
New School Union 76 superintendent
Mark Jenkins, a 25-year veteran principal and teacher, was hired as the new superintendent in June. Jenkins recently served as principal of Fort Fairfield High School for 12 years.
Students should be out at least five minutes earlier than the time for their pickup. They should not be running out the door at the last minute to catch the bus. This throws off the schedule for every student after that stop.

The projected enrollment is 217 students in the elementary school and 134 in the high school.
Elementary school: DISES will be joining the Coastal Athletic League, including Sedgwick, Brooklin, Penobscot, Brooksville, Castine, Surry and the Bay School. Fifth graders will be allowed to participate in soccer, basketball and cheering. Athletic schedules and information will be posted at facebook.com/DiSElementaryAthletics.
