Brooklin puts its emphasis on kids with playthings of the past

by Bette Britt

When making plans for what to do that would be special for their 2012 version of “Touring Through Time,” the Brooklin Keeping Society decided to focus on children. And, perhaps in consideration of the shorter attention span of their targeted visitors, the volunteers opted to hold the local observance only on Saturday, July 28. Additionally, the Keepers were involved with preparations for the 100th birthday celebration at Friend Memorial Library on Sunday, July 29.

In line with the theme “Playthings of the Past,” the exhibit room was filled with displays of toys such as dolls, a miniature navy, some hand-painted sailors, an ark with wooden animals, board games that grandparents might have played and a variety of paper dolls. To the delight of some, there was a basket filled with costume jewelry for playing dress-up, while others focused on punch and cookies. Active and creative young “tourists” found materials and enthusiastic adults to help them get started on craft projects in the adjacent work space, once a portable classroom but now the Brooklin Keeping Society’s “headquarters.”

BKS plays a role in the community beyond collecting, cataloguing and displaying things from the past; it sponsors programs for the public, with an important one coming up on Tuesday, August 14. To be held at the school, the event features Emmy-winner Paul Sullivan, the Brooklin Town Band, a sing-along, an ice-cream social, plus both a silent and a Chinese auction. The starting time for this event, the organization’s “major fund-raiser,” is

5:30 p.m. For tickets in advance and more information, call Clare Sullivan at 359-2563.

Future public events will be held on Thursday, September 27, at 7 p.m., when Richard Freethey will conduct a tour and discussion of the Village Cemetery; on Thursday, October 25, the public is encouraged to gather at BKS headquarters to share opinions about “Brooklin’s Worst Storm” at 7 p.m.
