Championship regatta comes to Blue Hill
Community invited nightly for dinner and dancing

by Faith DeAmbrose

The Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club will be hosting racing by day and dinner and dancing by night at the National Championship Regatta of the Atlantic Class Association on August 21-24.

The race will draw sailors from Maine and across New England to compete over the course of four days in Blue Hill Bay. Six races will take place toward overall national standing in the regatta, as well as an inaugural secondary race—the W. Starling Burgess Cup—that will not count towards the nationals. Held Thursday, August 23, the Burgess Cup race has a 10:30 a.m. harbor start time and “is open to all who wish to participate,” according to the Atlantic National website atlanticnationals.info. All Atlantic class boats can take part in the race, which will circle Long Island.

In addition to the races, the Yacht Club will host a slew of dinners, with varying menus depending on the night. Dishes include lobster, chicken teriyaki and chowder, all served at the John Peters Estate. The parties, on Monday through Friday, will be open to the public with advanced ticket purchase, with children under 12 eating for free. Each night will also feature different live entertainment, including Ellacapella and the Atlantic Clarion Steel Drum Band on Monday, the Cooool Rocking Jazz band on Tuesday, Portland’s Retrospecticus on Wednesday, and the award winning Mallet Brothers on Friday.

The week promises day after day, and night after night, of food, music, and of course, racing. The Atlantic Nationals Regatta is a competitive event, expected to draw more then 300 sailors to the Blue Hill area, according to a press release.

Tickets for the evening dinners are available at the Blue Hill Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. For more information about the Atlantic Nationals or the events planned visit atlanticnationals.info. Tickets can also be purchased at the website.
