by Jessica Brophy Twenty-one people signed up to join the Deer Isle-Stonington Parent-Teacher Association at its inaugural meeting on April 4. Those who have signed on to the PTA represent different parts of the community, said Deena Staples. Staples organized the PTA and is its first president. “We had high school and elementary school teachers, principals, school board members, community members, parents and parents of children who aren’t in school yet,” said Staples. She said there were five to seven others who had expressed interest. “The great thing is that you can be involved to whatever degree is going to work for you,” said Staples. “You can be a part of whatever projects you want to. You don’t need to have a ton of time to devote.” The PTA’s first project will be planning something for Teacher Appreciation Week, which typically takes place in May. Staples was elected president of the new PTA; Traci Martin as vice president; April Coombs as treasurer; Amanda Larrabee as secretary; and Kathleen Billings-Pezaris and Karen Atwell were elected board members. All PTA officer positions are re-elected every year, and one person can only hold any particular office for two consecutive years. “That way things stay fresh,” said Staples. The PTA will hold meetings the first Thursday of every month in the elementary school library at 6 p.m. All are welcome.
