South Street project explained at highway department hearing

An estimated 100 persons attended a pubic hearing conducted in the Blue Hill Town Hall last Wednesday night to discuss the proposed South Street highway project….

ON TENNEY HILL, [engineer Sylvester] Poor said, the road would be built 36 to 38 feet wide, curb to curb, with drainage through catch basins. It is possible the road could be made three lanes up the hill if money were available, he said.

The rest of the route would be ordinary rural design, with eight-foot graded shoulders beside a 24 foot pavement.

Poor said design of the new road was based on estimates of traffic in 20 years. Average daily traffic on Main Street now is 1,495 vehicles, he said. In 1981 the estimate is for 2,093.

For the Parker Point Road, counts show average traffic now at 1,130. Re-routing on South Street would, it was estimated, reduce the count by 450 or average traffic of 680. It was estimated that South Street, after the new road was built, would carry 640 cars on the average, growing to 896 by 1981.
