DISHS Boys soccer team loses to Bangor Christian

by Jack Scott

The boys soccer team lost its final game to number one Bangor Christian 5-1. We were able to hold BC scoreless for 20 minutes in the first half, and then BC managed 3 goals before the half. Down 4-0 about halfway through the second half, Coach Bennett Morey let Nathan Davis play in goal (he’d been wanting to for awhile) and it actually made us relax. We were talking and playing without any pressure, or so it seemed.

Not long afterwards, Kevin Melanio took the ball down the right side from an Ole Bartos pass, speeding past the defense and kicked it in for our goal. We actually made several other rushes that resulted in a shot on goal, many more than we had before. BC was able to break away in the last minute and got a final goal, but we hadn’t been playing on our heels. This had made the last 20 minutes or so enjoyable, despite our being to out-shot 29-4 overall.

The boys end up without a win, but have done well by making great progress through the season. We return the nucleus of this team, and most all of the younger players gained valuable experience on the field. The experience and the leadership that we will return should bode very well next year.

Coach Bennett Morey feels that this is a motivated group that wants to regain the success that the boys have had in the past. The boys have worked hard to improve their play and he feels that we should expect to make the playoffs next year, with the players stepping up to make that happen.
