’Tis the season for chess

If it’s Halloween season (and it was Monday), then chess season must be upon us, too. In fact, chess season started on Tuesday!

We are starting a new chess year that never seems to end until September—if we keep winning state titles and we keep having Summer Open Chess and Summer Chess Lessons.

Last season, 2010-2011, was a banner year. We captured three of the four Maine State Scholastic Chess Titles: K-3, K-6 and K-8 (plus a third place finish in the K-12, which came down to Deer Isle-Stonington vs. Cheverus in round 3). Previously, we had only won three titles in 1997 and 2006, so it was a great season.

Schedule-wise, parents be advised (if your chess notice got in the wash or lost between school and home) that high school chess with new coach Isaac Marnik will be on Mondays, with matches every other Thursday. Kindergarten through grade 3 will practice at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School cafeteria every Wednesday from 2:45-3:55 p.m. K-6 and K-8 will practice in the same location every Tuesday, with the possibility of the K-8 students joining the high school over in Ms. Turner’s room on occasion to get some more competition.

The big event, the Lacy Greenlaw Chess-a-thon, will take place on Thursday, November 10, in the DISES cafeteria beginning at 7:30 p.m. this year because of the parent/teacher conferences. It will end at the same time, 6 a.m., as usual.

Parents/players are reminded to get pledges of money for the hours that they stay awake (the players, not the parents) and that this is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Anyone in the community not approached by a chess player is welcome to bring in a donation to the DISES office and leave it with Tiffany or mail it to the school.

Ribbon cutting for the chess-a-thon will take place at 8 p.m. with Debbie Greenlaw, Lacy’s mom, doing the honors. All parents should be present as the Chess-a-thon begins at 7:30 p.m. with a parents meeting in the DISES library with Leslie Rice leading the discussion. If for some reason you can’t attend, contact Leslie to see what you should know about 2011-2012 chess at DIS.
