The George Stevens Academy track team took full advantage of a beautiful day May 6, beating all other Class C schools and placing fifth overall for both the boys and girls teams.
Ten schools participated in the meet at Mount Desert Island High School. Junior Liana Arquette snagged second place in the javelin (an 82 feet 10 inch throw) and the shot put (a 28 feet 6 inch throw).
Arquette also placed fourth in the discus. Junior Inji Hwang came in fourth in the race walk, with a 11:49:18 time.
Senior Vika Grindle placed fourth in the long jump, with 14 feet 2 inches. Sophomore Lucy Jakub placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 54:11 time. The 4x100 team of Grindle, sophomore Shannon Larkin, senior Mariah Blodgett, and junior Amanda Moir snagged a fifth place time of 1:02:31.
The boys did well too. Junior Ben Plohr set a school record in the 400 meter with his 52.85 time. Plohr also placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a 16:84 time and contributed to a third-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with junior Nick Dillon and seniors Harvard Bridges and Sam Eley. The team had a 3:55:12 time.
Senior Nick Doolittle placed fourth in the long jump with just a hair over 18 feet, fourth in the high jump at 5 feet 6 inches, and sixth in the 200 meter with a time of 25.77.
He also placed second in the 4x100 with partners Dillon and sophomores Kiyoshi Kuniyoshi and Abe Ziner. The team’s 4x100 time was a hundredth of a second off the first place finish.
Senior Ben Avery placed fourth in the 1600 race with a 5:14:84 time and third in the 3200 race with a 11:48:32 time. In the 4x800 relay, freshman Sam Stahnke and sophomores Paul Ferreira, Alex Turanski, and Beck Brownlow finished fifth with a time of 10:30:15.
Kuniyoshi placed fifth in the 100 meter with a 12:27 time and fourth in the 200 meter with 25:36 time, Nick Dillon placed sixth in the 100 meter with a 12:52 time.
Sophomore Everett Lindholm-Fiske placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles at 19:67. Great job Eagles!.
On May 2, the boys and girls varsity tennis teams traveled to Millinocket to battle the Stearns Minutemen in singles and doubles action.
The girls shut out Stearns with a final score of 5-0. In first singles action, junior Sotherd Steer beat Katelyn Campbell 8-0. In second singles, senior Tierney Hally beat Liesbeth Bakker 8-0. In third singles, freshman Charlotte Reiter beat Stephanie Decker 8-1.
Both GSA doubles teams wons as well. The first doubles team of juniors Ramsay Williamson and Grace Bugbee beat Taylor Layne and Jaime Potvin 8-0. In second singles, seniors Hannah Dietz and Aji Hall beat Acadia LeVasseur and Chelsea Cyr 8-1.
The boys beat Stearns with a final score of 4-1. In first and second singles, sophomores Johnny Xue and Jasper Adam each beat their opponents 8-2 while the third singles player, freshman Alexander Heilner, beat Kameron Laplante 8-4. The GSA first doubles team of senior Storme Macomber and Roy Xu lost 8-2. The second doubles team of Jason Gao and James Chen beat Alex Waller and Chad McKoy 8-6.
GSA’s tennis players faced the MDI Trojans on May 3. The girls lost 5-0. The boys won 3-2. Xue beat Garrett Lee 8-2 in first boys singles. Adam beat Andrew Dalton 8-5 in second singles. Heilner beat Ian Sampson 8-2 in third singles.
In first doubles, MDI’s Elliot Klaver and Sam Jacobson beat Gao and Chen 9-7, while in second doubles MDI won by forfeit.
In the girls’ first singles, Sotherd Steer lost 8-2 to MDI’s Mea Clark and in second singles Tierney Hally lost 8-0 to MDI’s Grace Robbins. In third singles, Charlotte Reiter lost to Julia Christie 8-2.
In first doubles, GSA’s Williamson and Bugbee lost 8-6 to MDI’s Megan Phelps and Hannah Worcester. In second doubles, GSA’s Hannah Dietz and Aji Hall lost 8-5 to MDI’s Mia Musetti and Caroline Brown.
On May 6, GSA won shutout, 5-0, victories against Deer Isle-Stonington.
In the boys’ first singles, Adam beat Ian Pelletier 8-1. In second singles, Heilner beat Jerry Lin 8-6. In third singles, Gao beat Kevin Milanio 8-3.
The Chen and Corey An first doubles team and the Xu and Chase Bradford second team won by forfeit.
Steer beat Esther Adams 8-6 in girls’ first singles. Tierney Hally beat Paige Rollins 8-0. In third singles Charlotte Reiter beat Alorah Gellerson 8-0.
Both GSA girls doubles teams walked away with wins as the first doubles team of juniors Maddie Theoharidis and Williamson beat Luana Diamante and Kristyn Davis 8-1.
In second doubles, junior Bugbee and senior Lucy Wanning beat Sasha Zembrusky and Amy Bolton 8-0.
The tennis players are scheduled to travel to Deer Isle on May 12 to face the Mariners again. Good luck tennis teams!
The baseball and softball diamonds were full of action last week. The Eagles traveled to face the Bucksport Golden Bucks May 3 and hosted the Washington Academy Raiders May 6.
The varsity baseball team lost to Bucksport 9-7. Senior Nick Kane had a double and a single for the Eagles.
The varsity softball team lost to the Bucks 13-0. Junior Richelle Kane led the Eagles with two singles.
The Eagles played hard May 6 at home but only the baseball team won. Senior Jesse Dow pitched five innings and allowed the Raiders only three hits, striking out eight and giving up three walks.
Kane had a triple, two singles, and one RBI. Junior Schuyler Van der Eb had two singles and one RBI. Junior Ben Olivari contributed an RBI double to the 11-1 GSA win.
In softball, the Eagles lost to the Raiders 10-8. Richelle Kane and junior Shelbi Candage had RBI doubles.
The varsity baseball team is now 4-1-2 for the season. The varsity softball team is 2-4.
Sailing Coach Tom Gutow and Assistant Coach Patrick Haugen are preparing their team for the big Downeast Fleet Race at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine on May 14 and 15.
The regatta determines the Maine State Sailing Champion.
