The Mariner teams must have been naughty, because Santa had no wins for them over Christmas. The girls basketball team lost to a scrappy Lee Academy team 53-44 on December 27.
We started out real strong with a pressure defense to take an 8-2 lead halfway through the first quarter, looking like we would dominate, but Lee stormed back to trail only 10-8. We weren’t executing and got sloppy with our offense. We got down 18-13 in the second quarter, but rallied to trail only 23-22 at the half.
We had an awful third quarter, scoring only 3 points while Lee scored 14 to pull out ahead. Lee shot well and didn’t allow second shots for us. We also committed turnovers and showed poor shot selection. We seemed to be energized in the fourth quarter and made a good run to get as close as 8 points, but couldn’t maintain our momentum as Lee took the air out of the ball. Chelsea Brown led us with 15 points, 8 in the first period and 7 in the fourth, Abby Grindle scored 10 points including two 3-pointers, Janelle Ciomei scored 9 points with three 3-pointers, and Britnie Jones scored 7.
The junior varsity boys lost to Lee that same day 43-29. The game was even in the first half as we were ahead 15-14 at the half. We fell back 27-21 after three, and then couldn’t get it back as we lost more ground in the fourth quarter. We are still learning to work together and Lee was able to take advantage of our errors to pull ahead in the second half. Lucas Oliver led us with 12 points and 17 rebounds, Nathan Davis, Charlie Gokey, and Stuart Bray each had 4 points while Jake Starkey had 8 rebounds.
The varsity boys lost to a strong Lee Academy team 65-39 later that day. We hung with them for three quarters before we self-destructed in the fourth quarter. We were quickly down 13-3 in the first before we battled back to trail by 6 before Lee heaved in a 3-pointer at the buzzer. We needed to shoot the ball better as we knew we weren’t going to get many second chance points against their height.
Unfortunately it was Lee who shot well, dropping in 11 3-pointers all together. We had the lead down to 8 points midway through the third, but turnovers and missed shots had us trailing by 12 points. Lee spread the floor and we had a miserable fourth quarter to make for the lop-sided score. Both Sam Grindle and Connor Morey fouled out early in the fourth, so Coach Glenn Billings put in the bench players to give them some experience.
Mario Bartlett had a strong game with 15 points, Sam Grindle 8, Dustin Powers 5, and Hayden Ciomei 4. We knew we had to put forth a strong effort to stay with them, and unfortunately we were not hitting on all cylinders. We are still a work in progress.
The girls’ record is at 4-1 and we are still in fifth place. We need to focus on playing strong in all the quarters. We struggled with rebounds and put backs against Lee and we also lost our discipline in the offensive set.
We have a couple of games this week with a big one against Bangor Christian on Friday, January 7, before our schedule gets pretty hectic.
I don’t know if you girls noticed, but we didn’t even get a mention in the Bangor Daily basketball supplement. We have to stay focused and show them wrong by how we play!
