Six games, five wins for DIS boys and girls

The Mariner varsity basketball teams each played three games in the last week for a total of five wins.

The boys beat Searsport 62-48 on January 25, with a whopping 25 points from Sam Grindle. Connor Morey and Kevin Melanio each contributed 10 points to the game and Mario Bartlett 8 points.

On Friday, the boys trounced Bangor Christian 77-46. Grindle put in 26 points in this game, Morey and Hayden Ciomei each 14 and Dylan Brown 10. The boys lost to Machias 64-48 on Monday this week. Tim Cormier and Hayden Ciomei each logged 13 points in the game.

According to the Maine Principals’ Association Web site, as of February 1 the team’s record is 9 and 5 for the season and they are in sixth place in Heal Point standings.

The girls ran all over Searsport on the January 27, with the final score 61-23. Britnie Jones was high scorer at 16 points, followed by Shiann Closson 11, Janelle Ciomei 10 and Chelsea Brown 10. Their next win was 49-21 over Bangor Christian last Friday. Ciomei and Brown each contributed 13 points to this game. The 44-30 win over George Stevens Academy on Monday this week included 20 points from Chelsea Brown and 13 from Heidi Brewer. Brown made 10 of her 12 free throw shots.

The girls stand at 12-2 for the season and are sixth in Heal Point standings as of February 1. This week’s schedule for both teams is:
• Thursday, February 3, at home v. Calvary Christian;
• Saturday, February 5, at Lee Academy;
• Monday, February 7, at George Stevens Academy.;
• Thursday, February 10, at home v. Jonesport-Beals.
