by Caroline Spear The Mariners varsity girls basketball team won three games in the last week. The girls walked all over Calvary Chapel with a 64-16 win. Chelsea Brown and Shiann Closson each scored 12 points. Heidi Brewer tossed in two free throws in the last minute of the game with Lee Academy to increase the Mariners’ lead to 3 points for a 35-32 win. Abigail Grindle scored 8 points in this game. Starting at 31-26 at the end of the third quarter, a hard-fought fourth quarter against George Stevens Academy earned the girls a 40-39 win. Janelle Ciomei and Britnie Jones each had 11 points. The girls are now 15-2 for the season and, before the GSA game, in sixth place in the Heal Point standings after these games. (At press time the standings had not been updated.) The girls will play their last regular season game against Jonesport-Beals on Thursday, February 10, at 6 p.m. at home. If they hold in sixth place or above, they’ll get a bye to the quarterfinals. If their standing drops, they’ll play a preliminary game on February 15. The boys won one game and lost two this week. The win was a big one, 86-37 over Calvary Chapel. Dylan Brown, Sam Grindle and Oliver Lawson each scored 13 points, while Connor Morey scored 12. The boys then lost to George Stevens Academy, 52-43, and Lee Academy, 86-47. Sam Grindle and Hayden Ciomei were the high scorers in these games. |
