by Chris Billings The first full week of regular season play at George Stevens Academy saw a lot of excitement on the court, on the mat and in the pool. The boys basketball team jumpstarted the season with two huge wins over Class C competitors Orono Red Riots and Searsport Vikings. At their season opener on December 10 against the Riots, the boys took the lead early on and never looked back, finishing the game with a final score of 81-46. Seniors Nick Doolittle, Tom Crowe, Harvard Bridges and junior Nick Dillon all scored in the double digits. On December 13 the Eagles hosted the Vikings and took an early lead in the first quarter. The Vikings started to close in before halftime, but the Eagles came into the third quarter fired up and finished the game with a 61-43 win. Senior Nick Kane and Dillon were high scorers for the game with 17 and 11 points, while Crowe grabbed 16 rebounds. Friday, December 17, the boys traveled to Ellsworth to take on the Ellsworth Eagles, this time coming up short. GSA lost 35-74 in a tough game, bringing its record thus far to 2-1. The GSA boys were scheduled to travel to Bucksport on Tuesday, December 21, to face the Golden Bucks. Their following games are; December 27 vs. Washington Academy at home; December 30 vs. Fort Kent at home; January 5 at Deer Isle-Stonington. While the boys basketball team was hosting games at GSA, the wrestling team was traveling to compete against Dexter, Hermon, and Penobscot Valley High School. On December 15, the team lost to Dexter 63-6. Sophomore Alex Turanski, competing in the 103-pound weight class, had the only pin for GSA. Competing against Hermon on the same day, the wrestlers had a much better meet, although they lost 42-24. Turanski had a pin. Sophomore Jordon Lord, junior Dustin Bowden, and senior Storme Macomber all won by forfeit. The wrestlers traveled to Howland December 18 to compete against PVHS and lost 60-12. Turanski had the only pin for GSA and Lord won by forfeit. The wrestlers were scheduled to travel to Washington Academy on December 22, to Hermon on December 28, to face Caribou on December 29 and Calais on January 5. If you went to GSA to see the varsity boys or girls basketball teams play last week, then you surely couldn’t miss the Eagles cheering team, which has been exciting the crowd and encouraging the players with smiles, chants, and cheers. When it is not at home games, the cheering squad is working hard on a competitive routine in preparation for its first competition in Old Town on Saturday, January 8. We will provide more details about the cheering team’s first competition in the next edition. The girls basketball team had its season opener on December 14, when it hosted the Searsport Vikings. The Eagles were in the lead from the first minutes of the game to the end. The Vikings were in foul trouble before halftime and the Eagles were able to use that to their advantage to win 62-22. Senior Mariah Blodgett and junior Abby Brady were high scorers with 11 points each. Two nights later, GSA hosted the Ellsworth Eagles and it was a fight from the start, trading basket for basket in the first quarter. By the end of the quarter, however, Ellsworth was leading by two points. GSA was not able to recover and lost 51-40. The girls were slated to travel to take on the Bucks of Bucksport on December 22. Subsequent games are December 28 at Washington Academy, December 30 at home vs. Fort Kent, January 4 at home vs. Bucksport, and January 6 at MDI. The swimmers had a great meet last week at Mount Desert Island High School, where they competed against the Trojans, who are current state champions. While still swimming in an exhibition status, the GSA swimmers recorded great times for their events, which could allow them to qualify for the state competition. There were seven GSA swimmers competing at MDI, and two recorded times were of distinction. Senior Ben Avery placed third in the boys 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04:24. Senior Jessie Dyer placed third in the girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28:54. Dyer also placed third in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:17:97. The Eagles were scheduled to swim in their first home meet of the season on the evening of Tuesday, December 21 at the Ellsworth YMCA. Their next meet is January 7 when they’ll swim against Caribou at the Ellsworth YMCA. |
