Rufus Candage of Blue Hill has been named Maine Boxing Commissioner. This job will entail the policing and promoting of all boxing activities in the state.

A native of Blue Hill, Candage applied for the job, was nominated by Governor Reed, and was later approved by the Governor’s Council.

He has always been interested in sports. He has done promotional work in semi-pro basketball and semi-pro baseball in both Waldo and Hancock counties, and hopes to expand this program to include all of eastern Maine in 1961.

Candage also heads the Blue Hill Fair baseball program, and was instrumental in getting Junior League teams started in Blue Hill.

A graduate of the George Stevens Academy, Candage is married to the former Jeannette Nash of Sorrento. They have one son, John, age 13.
