Cub Scout Pack 83 (Castine, Penobscot, Brooksville) recently conducted a conservation-based service project in cooperation with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands at Holbrook Island Sanctuary. On Saturday, September 30, Pack 83’s cubs and adults visited the island under the supervision of Park Ranger Charles Cannon and Cub Master Capt. Dana Willis. The scouts performed several hours of beach cleanup, trash collection, and maintenance of several historic grave sites on the island. Scouts literally collected a boatload of trash. Everyone shared a picnic lunchwhile the scouts learned some of the island’s history from Cannon. Participating scouts will earn the Conservation Good Turn Award, and many are working toward completion of the Cub Scout World Conservation Award. Boat transportation to and from the island was provided by Maine Maritime Academy and captained by Craig Desmond.
