The band “first began playing behind Buck’s Harbor,” Chase said, formed by his father Carl Chase who heard and learned pan drumming in Trinidad and from a book by the late Pete Seeger. By the early ’90s, father and son formed Flash! in the Pans, a community steel drum band that still performs across the Peninsula, raising money for schools and nonprofit organizations. With several spinoff bands, like Planet Pan, for high schoolers, and the Rhythm Rockets, for elementary schoolers, Nigel said, “We’re all one big family.” Atlantic Clarion’s appearance kicked off the library’s 2014 Art Adventure series.
