Gathering flags for Armistice Day

For the eighth year, members of Peninsula Peace and Justice honored the memory of civilians and soldiers who died in military fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and neighboring regions. Before pulling the flags from the War Dead memorial field on Main Street in Blue Hill, Viet Nam war veteran and teacher Dud Hendrick of Deer Isle spoke of “what the true cost of our wars has been,” drawing on his experience “as a military person.” The flags will be planted again in a Memorial Day ceremony in the field that is “a powerful presence in Blue Hill,” said PP&J member Peter Robbins.
