Remembering those we lost

Remembering those we lost

On Sunday, July 22, Brooksville residents gathered for a small memorial service on the Varnumville Road to honor those townsfolk who died in 2011. Many participants walked about a mile and a half to the site, while others went by car. Names of the deceased were read and friends or family spoke briefly and then tossed a flower into the stream for each loved one. Kurt Brand played his guitar, and Daniel Hoffman, former U.S. Poet Laureate, read two poems. Afterwards, the community gathered at Tinder Hearth for coffee, tea, fruit, and fresh blueberry muffins. This was the third annual memorial walk, which was begun to honor Michael Bernal, who died tragically in a car accident in July 2009 on the Varnumville Road.
