Evoking smiles across the area during Make Someone Smile Week

Fairwinds Florist of Blue Hill brightened the day of residents of Penobscot Nursing Home and Island Nursing Home during the “Make Someone Smile Week” event July 23-27. Make Someone Smile Week is a national event created and supported by Teleflora and known by florists countrywide as the “benevolent project.” Hundreds of florists donated their time to make and deliver smiling mugs of flowers to thousands. As a member of the Maine Unit of Teleflora, Fairwinds Florist participated in this event by coordinating the design and delivery of over 160 smile mugs to residents of Penobscot Nursing Home and Island Nursing Home on Friday, July 27, with help from flower wholesaler Fall River Florist Supply of Fall River, Mass., who donated the flowers and greens. The mugs were prepared at Fairwinds Florist in cooperation with the Blue Hill Consolidated School’s Garden Club, seen here, whose members took breaks from their summer vacations to come help fill the mugs with flowers.

Fairwinds Florist owner Cullen Schneider and her two sisters, Thea and Zoe, donated their time on Friday to hand deliver these arrangements to 168 unsuspecting recipients. “It was really touching,” Cullen Schneider said. “Flowers are such a simple and meaningful way to brighten a day, and a great way to connect members of the community to one another.”
