Seven miles off the coast of Stonington, Isle au Haut is accessible by the mail boat and by private vessel. The island is the year-round home to some 70 people whose needs are met by the one store, post office, library and church. A one-room school accommodates the island’s elementary students, with high schoolers being educated off-island. Isle au Haut is one of the 15 offshore islands still occupied year-round. The first summer visitors arrived about 1880, and three-quarters of the homes on the island are for seasonal or recreational use. More than half of the island is part of the Acadia National Park system. All of the island’s camping facilities are on the park’s land. Reservations must be made before arriving on the island. Day visitors enjoy walking the island’s paths, which encompass both a quiet inlet on the Stonington side and open surf on the “wild” side of the island.
